A hydrogen-electric air taxi has completed a record-breaking, 523-mile (842 kilometers) flight over California, producing only water as a direct by-product. The flight, which was three times further than the distance records set by electric vehicles of the same developer, "demonstrates the potential for hydrogen to unlock emissions-free, regional journeys," according to a statement from Joby Aviation, the company behind the air taxi prototype. The air taxi had 10% of its hydrogen fuel load remaining after the flight, meaning it could fly even longer in the future. The flight took place June 24 and is the first ever forward flight of a hydrogen-fueled aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), according to Joby Aviation. Previous hydrogen-fueled flights used either airplane-like aircraft requiring a runway or smaller vehicles, such as Metavista's unmanned multi-rotor design. Those hydrogen-fueled airplane flights lasted between 10 minutes and 3 hours, in the case of a H2FLY design (H2FLY is a Joby Aviation subsidiary). Metavista's vehicle flew for a record 12 hours. It's unclear what distance these aircraft covered, but H2FLY said its airplane could one day fly up to 930 miles (1,500 km). Joby Aviation's air taxi is a modified electric aircraft with six rotors that can be used in urban settings. The original battery-operated vehicle completed 25,000 miles (40,000 km) of testing across many flights at the company's base in Marina, California and over New York City. Engineers then converted this battery-electric aircraft into a hydrogen-electric one by adding a fuel tank capable of storing 88 pounds (40 kilograms) of liquid hydrogen, as well as a hydrogen fuel cell system, according to the statement. Related: Largest ever fully electric concept plane could take to the skies by 2033 The fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity, water and heat in the presence of oxygen. The electricity then powers the aircraft's rotors, according to the statement, while the water is released as a waste product. The aircraft also carries a reduced number of batteries at all times, providing extra power during takeoff and landing. "Imagine being able to fly from San Francisco to San Diego, Boston to Baltimore, or Nashville to New Orleans without the need to go to an airport and with no emissions except water," JoeBen Bevirt, the founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, said in the statement. https://www.livescience.com/technology/electric-vehicles/hydrogen-powered-vtol-aircraft-makes-record-523-mile-journey CrowdStrike stock falls after report Delta will seek compensation for IT outage (Reuters) — Shares of CrowdStrike (CRWD) fell more than 4% in pre-market trading on Tuesday after a report Delta Air Lines (DAL) will seek compensation from the cybersecurity firm over the recent global IT outage that crippled industries including airlines. The cyber outage led to more than 2,200 flight cancellations on July 19 and Delta has canceled over 6,000 flights so far since then. CrowdStrike's "Falcon Sensor" software had caused Microsoft Windows to crash and display a blue screen, known informally as the "Blue Screen of Death". Delta has hired a law firm and will also seek compensation from Microsoft (MSFT), CNBC reported on Monday. CrowdStrike's stock, which had more than doubled in 2023, has fallen over 24% since the outage, leading to a loss of over $20 billion in market valuation. Many clients are considering slowing or pausing spending on CrowdStrike and expecting pricing concession, according to a survey by Evercore ISI. "Nearly everyone agreed that they expect some form of monetary relief, such as discounts, service revenue credits, or free products," the brokerage said in a note on Tuesday, adding that feedbacks from clients suggest that CrowdStrike was already discussing this with its customers. Analysts at Needham said damages from the outage will lead to "hindered customer willingness to rely heavily on singular platforms, as that choice introduces concentration risk." The brokerage said that CrowdStrike customers it spoke to displayed frustration over the outage, depicting it as a "total nightmare" disrupting their business during one of the year's busiest travel and shopping periods. https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/crowdstrike-down-report-delta-air-105743974.html Multiple airlines cancel flights to Lebanon Lufthansa group, Middle East Airlines, and several other airlines cancel flights to Beirut for July 29, 30, due to fears of escalation following Hezbollah rocket attack on children in soccer field. The German Lufthansa on Monday reported its decision to suspend five routes to and from Beirut, Lebanon, following a Hezbollah rocket attack on a soccer field in Majdal Shams, and fears that Israel would retaliate. The attack left 12 dead and 39 injured. All of the victims are between 10-20 years of age. The decision, made due to "an abundance of caution," affects the group's carriers, which include Swiss International Air Lines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa, and is in effect until July 30. Previously, Lufthansa suspended flights to and from Beirut for the duration of July. Britain issues Lebanon travel warning Meanwhile, the Lebanese Middle East Airlines (MEA) postponed the return of some of its flights. According to them, the reason for their decision is insurance risks. Other airlines which canceled flights to Beirut include Turkish Airlines, Aegean Airlines, and Ethiopian Air, for July 29, and Air France and Transavia for July 29-30. On Sunday, the US Embassy in Beirut issued a travel warning for Lebanon, urging citizens to remain alert and "strongly urging" US citizens "to reconsider travel to Lebanon." https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/393790 Spring City Aviation Achieves FAA SMS Part 5 Acceptance through Declaration of Compliance Statement Aviation Safety Solutions (PRNewsfoto/Aviation Safety Solutions) MILWAUKEE, July 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Aviation Safety Solutions is proud to congratulate Spring City Aviation on achieving acceptance of their Safety Management System (SMS) under FAA Part 5 regulations. The NTSB investigation is set to review the pilot’s experience, aircraft maintenance records, and the operating environment, an agency spokesperson said. [Credit: Shutterstock] Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have begun gathering wreckage from the site of a Pilatus PC-12 crash that killed seven Friday near the Montana-Wyoming border. Three of the people on board the privately owned aircraft were members of the Atlanta-based gospel group The Nelons. According to USA Today, those who died in the crash have been identified as singers Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, Nathan and Amber Kistler, and group assistant Melody Hodges. The aircraft, a 2010 PC-12/47E single-engine turboprop, was registered to Haynie Enterprises Inc. It was piloted by its owner, Larry Haynie, who along with his wife, Melissa, was also killed in the accident. According to a statement from the Gaither Management Group, the family was en route to Seattle to join the Gaither Homecoming Cruise in Alaska. It was noted that Autumn, the youngest daughter of the Kellys, and her husband, Jamie Streetman, arrived in Seattle by other means and are safe. Flight History The PC-12 departed from West Georgia Regional Airport (KCTJ) around 9:30 a.m. EST Friday, stopping at Nebraska City Municipal Airport (KAFK) to refuel. The aircraft lifted off around noon, heading for Billings Logan International Airport (KBIL) in Montana. Approximately two hours into the flight while cruising at an altitude of 26,000 feet, Haynie notified controllers there was a problem with the autopilot and he was losing control of the aircraft. The ADS-B data as recorded by FlightAware.com shows multiple turns and pitch changes. The ground speed varied from 173 to 319 mph, and at one point the aircraft was descending at 5,545 feet per minute. The ADS-B readout shows a series of descending turns before data is lost. According to the Gillette News Record, the aircraft crashed near the town of Recluse, Wyoming, near the Montana state line, causing a small wildfire that was contained to about 38 acres. There were no injuries on the ground, although witnesses reported seeing the airplane circling and flying low before the crash. Debris from the aircraft was found away from the main impact. One of the theories that NTSB investigators will be looking at is the possibility of an in-flight breakup, as the aircraft was not designed for such rapid and extreme altitude and airspeed changes. According to NTSB spokesperson Keith Holloway, the investigation begins with the identification of the so-called "four corners" of the aircraft: the nose, tail and wing tips “Part of the investigation will be to locate those sections,” Holloway told FLYING. “NTSB investigators have the experience and expertise to locate aircraft parts even from aircraft that are not quite intact. They have the knowledge of being able to locate aircrafts parts that may be unidentifiable to the average person. Unfortunately, it is not rare that NTSB investigators have situations involving scattered wreckage from a plane crash.” When the wreckage is scattered over a wide area in a remote location, gathering it up takes time and is a painstaking but necessary process as each piece is considered evidence and part of a puzzle. “With the use of the NTSB metallurgical lab and review of navigational devices and equipment, NTSB investigators are still able to put together the scenario of what probably happened and determine a cause of the crash,” Holloway said. According to Holloway, the NTSB investigations involve three basic review areas: the pilot—notably their actions in the 72 hours prior to flight, as well as ratings and recency of experience—aircraft maintenance records, and the operating environment. The agency will also listen to recordings of any ATC communications and review radar data and weather reports. If there are any witnesses to the event, they will be interviewed as well, Holloway said, adding that the NTSB will "look for electronic devices that could contain information relevant to the investigation and any available surveillance video, including from doorbell cameras.” The NTSB preliminary report is expected to be available in a few weeks. The final report with the probable cause of the accident is several months out from being released. https://www.flyingmag.com/news/ntsb-to-focus-on-four-corners-of-pc-12-in-fatal-crash-probe/ CALENDAR OF EVENTS • 2024 FAA Drone and AAM Symposium, July 30-August 1 | Baltimore, MD • Asia Pacific Summit for Aviation Safety (AP-SAS 2024), Aug. 13-15, Beijing, China. • Asia Pacific Airline Training Symposium - APATS 2024, 0-11 September, 2024, Singapore • Aircraft Cabin Air International Conference - 17 & 18 September - London • 2024 Ground Handling Safety Symposium (GHSS) - September 17-18, 2024 - Fort Worth, TX • 2024 ISASI - Lisbon, Portugal - September 30 to October 4, 2024 • DEFENCE AVIATION SAFETY 2024 - 2 OCTOBER - 3 OCTOBER 2024 - LONDON • International Congress of Aerospace Medicine ICAM 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal, 3 - 5 October 2024 • Aviation Health Conference back on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th October 2024 • Safeskies Australia Conference, Canberra Australia - 16th and 17th of October 2024 - www.safeskiesaustralia.org • 2024 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition - Oct. 22-24 (Vegas) • Sixth Edition of International Accident Investigation Forum, 21 to 23 May 2025, Singapore Curt Lewis
